Biopsy or not

Biopsy or not

In the process of having prostrate cancer diagnosed. MRI results show 5/5 t2 score and significant clinical risk of cancer however psa levels remain around 2.3. Seeing an urology tomorrow and guessing biopsy will be next however wanted thoughts in this and the potential of cancer spread because of the biopsy. Iโ€™m relatively young – only 58

G’day, For proper diagnoses you need the biopsy and I think you’ll find that cancer spread from the biospy is notany thing to worry about. Getting a proper diagnoses is the key to making informed decisions.

I had the biospy, for me the most annoying thing about it was after it was done, was the nurses kept coming by and asking me if I had peed yet. As for blood in the urine, I had none that I was aware of.

As for options later if your going to get the prostate out I recommend robotic surgery (and a surgeon who has done quite few)

Hi, I’m 60, my PSA was only 3.4, DRE was seaming fine, but Urologist decided to perform Biopsy and I’m glad, I was diagnosed early with Cancer and have started treatment – early detection is goodness

Thanks for your post and Welcome to the PCFAโ€™s OC.

While you are waiting for further replies to your post it might be helpful to ready this page on biopsy-click here.

You may be describing Needle track seeding or tumour seeding .

There are only a very small number of published case reports since 2015 that cited evidence of biopsy seeding, so this is extremely rare. This is despite millions of biopsies performed worldwide during this time period. Likewise, there is no conclusive evidence that prostate biopsy can cause metastases.

The biopsy is an important element of a prostate cancer diagnosis as it examines the tissue and is the only way a definitive diagnosis can be made. This helps determine the level of risk your cancer may present and the treatment options that may be suitable.

And thanks @Basham 6590, a side effect of a prostate biopsy can be blood in the urine sporadically for days to weeks and blood in the semen for several ejaculations. Most side effects are temporary. Many men will have some temporary bruising, pain or discomfort around the perineum or scrotum, and some men experience temporary changes in erectile function or patterns of urination.

You may wish to discuss any concerns with your treating specialist who should answer these questions.

Not sure what you mean by the cancer spreading because of a biopsy? A biopsy is the only definitive way to tell if it is cancer or not. You are in an out of hospital same day. Only side effect is that you will pee blood for a week or two.
