Recovery support

Recovery support

My husband aged 59 is booked for a Nerve Sparing Robotic Total Prostatectomy in June. He has been told he will stay in hospital for 1 – 2 nights after surgery, depending on immediate recovery.

I need to apply now for time off work to assist with care at home. The two days after surgery I am rostered on to work but he will possibly still be in hospital where he will be receiving care.

Any thoughts on when I should start leave or how much time off should I expect to take off?

I had a radical prostectomy 4 weeks ago. My partner took leave the afternoon I was discharged from hospital and the next two days. The two extra days were nice, but definitely not necessary. Especially since I didn’t move about much and slept a lot.

Hi Ellembee,

Following surgery, men require someone to be available when they are discharged from hospital. This can be the following day – Day 1) or Day 2.

Many men will be self care and independent when they are at home recuperating in the early weeks after radical prostatectomy. Men are restricted with level of activity and manual tasks that require lifting or excursion at this time. Mostly these can be avoided though.
