Incontinence

Incontinence

Iโ€™m beginning week 6 post radical prostatectomy and finding urinary incontinence tricky – sometimes rarely, sometimes often, and usually difficult to know how much, as the pads always seem dry. Are there ways to tell?

So why has no one mentioned wearing a small soft penis clamp to help fill the bladder? Is there some health concern? Many examples, this is but one. 2025-11-23_11-24-08.pdf

My incontinence is massive when I walk around, but I believe age (I am 70) has a lot to do with the speed of my recovery. How are others going ?

Week 6 I have noticed it feels worse than it really is.

I find this incontinence a right royal pain in the #ss. I do forget to do my exercises and stand up and piss myself. I am learning the

hardway. At seventy, it is so emarrising. My nurse sent me an

email with these hints and tips:

PFM Program

  1. Strengthening

AIM: 3-6 sessions per day

  • Standing at the beginning of the day and later sitting if fatigued
  • Jelly Belly, close your eyes
  • Focus on โ€œstopping a weeโ€ โ€“ you may still feel the abdominal and anal muscles โ€“ ignore them.
  • Hold hard (no pain) for up to 10 secs
  • Repeat 10 times โ€“ with 10 sec rest between each squeeze
  1. Functional Integration into ADLs
  • Combine PFM contraction with walking โ€“ PFM on for 5 steps, off for 5 steps etc โ€ฆ aim for 10 on, 10 off
  • Squeeze PFM before you stand from sitting
  • Squeeze before ANY increase in intra-abdominal pressure
  • Squeeze PFM before cough/sneeze/bend/lift/push/pull/carry/twist/squat/nose blow etc etc
  • hope it helps

Hi Fernandes9962

You might find it useful to start with the links below for further information.

Some men find weighing a clean pad and then a used pad can provide feedback as to accuracy of urine lost. With 1ml of urine will weigh 1gm. For example if the used pad is 100gms heavier than the unused pad then the urine leak = 100ml

If you need support, please donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to our Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse Telephone service.

We can help provide more information about monitoring urinary leakage after prostate surgery.

You can reach us on 1800 22 00 99 (ask to speak to a nurse), or follow the link to request a call back https://www.prostate.org.au/nursing-support/ and weโ€™ll get back to you. Weโ€™re here to help

I’m at week 4 post prostatectomy, and still struggling with incontinence, but fortunately its not as bad as I thought it might be, I have some good days and some awkward days. But if your pads always seem dry then it seems you are doing very well. Your story gives me some optimism.
